Thieves steal power cables in Selby District

Police are appealing for witnesses after two large cable thefts over the past few days in Selby District.

At sometime between Monday 11 August and Tuesday 12 August 2014, thieves stole around £20,000 worth of copper cable from Stubbs Bridge on Beal Lane at Kellington.

The second theft occurred at sometime between 1.30am and 2.10am on 12 August 2014. Thieves took 1000 meters of overhead cabling from Cobcroft lane in Knottingley.

Officers believe that some form of climbing aid must have been used to access the cable and are urging anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time of the theft to get in touch.

PC Dave White, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "These thefts were extremely dangerous and irresponsible and I am sure someone will have seen something which can help the investigation.

"If you saw any suspicious people or vehicles in the areas the thefts occurred, you may have information vital to our enquiries and I urge you to come forward as soon as possible.

"I would also urge people to be vigilant and report anyone who is seen behaving suspiciously around power lines to contact the police or Crimestoppers."

Anyone with information about either theft is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 - select option 2 - and ask for Selby Police.

If you prefer not to give your name, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
