EUG5
The fifth Pol-PRIMETT EUG met on Wednesday 21st March 2012, in London, UK.
David Ransom presented an overview of Pol-PRIMETT’s aims and objectives and advised the EUG that this three year project has a total investment of €1.25 million. The overall aim is to reduce the level of metal theft across Europe and leave a legacy of good practice that benefits all.
The key note speakers were Lord Henley, Minister of State for Crime Prevention and Ian Hetherington, British Metals Recycling Association.
Lord Henley outlined the proposed changes to UK legislation affecting scrap metal dealers.

The EUG split into four action based workshops before coming together in the afternoon to summarise the workshops and to discuss future priorities.
The workshops included:
- Serious and organised crime facilitated by Steve Welsh, Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA)
- Tax opportunities around metal thieves and recyclers facilitated by Ingrid Blau, HM Revenue and Customs
- Exporting metal and opportunities to detect at port facilitated by Tish Birch, UK Border Force
- Environmental enforcement on metal in the UK and throughout the EU facilitated by Paul Keay, UK Environment Agency
